Teacher Training — Seminar II: Preparing a path to the Intermediate Level

Piano Adventures Teacher Training — Seminar II
Seminar Instructor:
David Andruss, pianist and docent at the University of Würzburg

Piano Adventures, the most widely‐used piano method in North America and in much of Asia, has set new standards of quality for pedagogical materials. This innovative method is now available in a German edition.

This two-day seminar—the second of the three-part teacher-training program for the Basic Method Books—is also packed full of  intensive, interactive work on the pedagogy and methodology of the pieces in levels 3 & 4 of the German Edition of the Piano Adventures Basic Piano Method books.

In Levels 3 & 4, students are introduced step by step to eighth notes, half and whole steps, 5‑Finger Scales in all major and minor keys, transposition, the basics of scale playing, arpeggios and legato pedalling. Not only finger velocity and independence are consistently developed in these levels, but also an ever expanding palette of tools for musical expression and creativity.

Here are the main areas of focus of this seminar at a glance:

  • increasing speed and independence of the fingers while maintaining a supple wrist
  • differentiation of articulation and dynamics between the hands
  • legato pedalling
  • transposition
  • playing in all 12 major and minor 5‑finger-positions
  • an intensive look at the structure of the major scale Dur-Tonleiter including work with the primary cadence, harmonisation of notated melodies, working with lead sheets and improvisation
  • musical form

In Summary: Level 4 marks the well-rounded conclusion of the basics of piano playing.
Now the students are well prepared for the intermediate level (Level 5 & 6)!

In this seminar, you’ll profit directly from our years of experience with this method. In addition, you’ll receive valuable tips for the use of the books in one‐on‐one, partner, and group lessons, as well as creative ways to using the method’s multimedia tools and supplemental literature.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion for Piano Adventures Seminar II (Levels 3 & 4) at the end of the seminar.

Seminars I, II, III and IV can be attended in any order. After completing all three seminars, teachers may apply to become a certified Piano Adventures Teacher.
